The N.C. Chinese Lantern Festival

It was our first visit to this magical place & things couldn’t have been more beautiful! Such a huge thanks to Koko Booth Amphitheatre for hosting us. A truly memorable experience.

Running November 19, 2021 - January 9, 2022, this festival is one I highly recommend. My crew was completely mesmerized. The huge, colorful lanterns are such impressive displays of Chinese culture. From the luminous artwork to the live performances, we couldn’t get enough.

The festival tour is self-guided. Although many were in attendance, we were able to leisurely stroll & admire the displays. Each lantern has a description explaining its significance in Chinese culture/lore. Therefore, while entertaining, the festival is also educational.

A little research taught us that the lanterns are commonly used (today) to celebrate the Chinese New Year. They are handcrafted & those skills have been passed down through generations for thousands of years!

Some areas are interactive which was perfect for my 8 year old. There are glowing “swings”, light-up stepping stones & piano keys. A few of the lanterns are robotic which adds a whole different vibe to the experience.

(See this reel for video footage of our visit.)

Last but certainly not least are the stage performances. The acrobatics are INCREDIBLE & were a highlight for us all. I recommend getting to the stage area early for a good view. While no outside chairs & mats are allowed, there are steps to sit on. Add that to the presence of overhead heat lamps & you have a recipe for a really good time.

Live performances are at 6:30 pm, 7:30 pm, & 8:30 nightly. You can always call ahead or check the Koko Booth Amphitheatre site to confirm times, ticket prices, plus rules/regulations. I like to add personal tips after our visits to events/venues. See the section below for some helpful information.

Know Before You Go

-Although parking is free, the lots fill fast. Arrive EARLY-especially if you’d like to park in the lot directly in front of the ticket office.

-Tickets can be purchased online (recommended) or on site.

-Be sure to check the weather forecast & bring necessary items (umbrellas, ponchos, etc). The entertainment happens rain or shine. Preparation is key.

-Wear comfortable shoes. The loop to see everything is about a half mile. Crowds & the length of time you admire displays will determine how long you’re on your feet.

-Give yourself at least an hour to see everything.

-There’s a concession stand with hot chocolate, food, & other goodies. The area was pretty crowded & lines were long during our visit. We ate before the festival to avoid this along with (usually higher) prices.

-The walkways are paved & there are ramps which makes the event stroller & wheelchair friendly.

-Dress warmly (coats, gloves, hats, scarves) on those colder nights & pack tissues in your purse/bag for runny little noses.
