Mom About Town: The Scott-Mebane Mill Demolition
My mornings typically look the same. An early wake up, a bit of playing (or yelling!) to get my daughters out of bed, then the ultimate rush to get on the road before my grace period expires. You know... the usual.
On Tuesday morning (April 10, 2018), I decided to do something different.
Most people have mixed feelings about social media (myself included), but it is very resourceful and keeps me informed about local activities. This time around, I learned about the demolition of The Scott-Mebane Mill in Graham, NC. With my four year old companion in tow, I headed that way.
It is one of the gorgeous historic mills in Alamance County and is registered with the National Register of Historic Places. It seems that a building with so much history, character, and good bones would be preserved and possibly restored. However, it has been purchased by Graham Presbyterian Church and is being demolished. What exactly will stand in its shadow is unknown.
Admittedly, I've passed this building many times not knowing anything about it. I went there on this particular morning in the same predicament. Despite my lack of knowledge, I witnessed a community unhappy about its fate. I simply asked "what's going on?" and there was no hesitation to fill me in.
Quite a few people poured out their feelings and the hopes they had for the Scott-Mebane Mill as the construction crew pulled it apart brick-by-brick, wall-by-wall, and memory-by-memory. Even someone as uninformed as I couldn't help but to share in the disbelief and sadness that loomed.
All we can do now is hope that there are big plans for this site. All eyes are on it and waiting.
**I wish I could have taken more pics but I had a "cold" preschooler to protect from busy bulldozers, dump trucks, and such. I'm sure you understand. **
