100 Ways To Adventure Cheaply In Fall & Winter

Colder days are here. Some love it, some hate it, but either way… we can’t tell Mother Nature what to do. So why not make the most of it? If not having freedom to adventure is what you’re worried about, STOP. You know I have you covered on this site! A change in seasons never stops true adventurers.

I’m always searching for things to do. Always. There’s so much to see & experience whether you’re alone or in good company. If jet-setting around the world isn’t your current reality, get creative! There are a plethora of ways to have fun, inexpensive adventures. Remember… adventure is what YOU make it!

Nothing I’ve listed here is rocket science. I may have already mentioned an activity in another post. However, there still may be a few things you haven’t done or thought of. As you make your way through the list, keep the weather/seasons in mind & adventure accordingly.

Let’s jump into it!


Adventuring With Kids

1. Go to the park. Easy peasy. Make it special by visiting one you’ve never been to!

2. Research the best photo spots in your town & head out!

3. Take a walk through your neighborhood & have a scavenger hunt.

4. Attend a library event.

5. Take a free or budget-friendly local class (crafts, karate, origami, etc).

6. Go to a discounted movie theater & make a day of it. (We once had a $1 theater!)

7. See a local play.

8. Visit a toy store.

9. Take a hike & collect items in nature for crafts & projects.

10. Visit an animal shelter, pet store, zoo, or conservators center.

11. Hang out in a bookstore & read books. My kids love visiting Barnes & Noble!

12. Camp out in your yard.

13. Turn on music & have a dance-off in the rain.

14. Play in a leaf pile. (Parents bring your camera!)

15. Enjoy a treat at a local bakery or one in a neighboring town.

16. Visit a farm.

17. Own a telescope? Bring it out on a clear night & stalk the universe!

18. Take your bikes to a bike trail & ride.

19. Go fishing.

20. Go sledding.

21. Have a bonfire & make s’mores.

22. Volunteer in the community.

23. Turn on Youtube & learn new dance moves.

24. Board games are always fun!

25. Have a sidewalk chalk drawing contest.

Adventuring As A Couple

26. Stay at a local hotel overnight or for a weekend.

27. Tour a local brewery or factory.

28. Try a new fitness class.

29. Restaurant hop for appetizers only.

30. Have a stargazing date.

31. Explore downtown shops you’ve never visited.

32. Wrap up, enjoy a warm drink by the fire pit, & share funny stories.

33. Go see a local band.

34. Hike in the snow. (Stay on course!)

35. Go to an escape room.

36. Take a walking tour of your town or city.

37. Take a cooking class together.

38. Visit a local museum.

39. Play a sport together with a “fun” loser consequence. Ooh la la!

40. Be kids again at an arcade.

41. Hike to a place with beautiful scenery & read to one another.

42. Spend a day at the nearest amusement park.

43. Go to a shooting range.

44. Take an archery class.

45. Sit somewhere & people watch.

46. Test drive cars for fun.

Adventuring As A Family

51. Check out holiday lights in your town.

52. Go ice skating.

53. Go horseback riding. Some places have ponies for kids.

54. Stay overnight at a hotel with an indoor pool & just keep swimming! Cheaper prices in fall & winter!

55. Check out historical buildings & sites to learn more about where you live.

56. Attend a family paint night.

57. Hike to a waterfall. The scenery is so gorgeous in Autumn!

58. Fly kites.

59. Have fun at a roller skating rink.

60. Grill out at the lake.

61. Visit an aquarium.

62. Find coupons & go indoor skydiving.

63. Explore a science museum.

64. Take a train or trolley ride.

65. Visit a lemur center.

66. Take an excursion boat tour at a local park.

67. Was a movie filmed near you? Go check out the grounds!

86. Finally tackle a DIY project you’ve been putting off.

87. If affordable, have a staycation at a local B&B. Treat yo’self!

98. Venture to a nearby art gallery.

99. Take a self-defense class. Free classes are often offered locally.
